Non-Toxic Household Cleaners

Brian Bartholomew - Monday, March 26, 2012

Non-Toxic Household Solutions

by Dr. David Jockers

The average household contains anywhere from 3 to 25 gallons of toxic materials.  Most of these materials are in our everyday cleaning products.  There is no current law that requires cleaning product manufacturers to list ingredients on their labels or to test their products for safety. Beyond that, they are not even required to list their ingredients since they are considered "trade secrets."  As the consumer, you have to take initiative to discover what is and isn't toxic.

Some products will contain certain labels such as "danger," "hazardous," or "poison," but they do little to identify the serious nature of the substance.  According to a study done by a New York poison control center, 85% of product labeling is inadequate, leading to high levels of unnecessary toxic exposure.

General Rule:  Avoid Use of:

a.     Any product with "danger, hazardous, or poison" on the label.  They aren't just dangerous if you ingest them, but any exposure and inhalation of the vapors of these toxins can cause serious problems.

b.    Any product that doesn't list all their ingredients.

c.     Anything with petroleum-based surfactants, formaldehyde, chlorine or phosphates among other things.

d.    Look for labels such as "non-toxic," or "biodegradable"

You can also find a great selection of natural cleaning products at any health food store such Whole Foods market.  In addition, many companies such as Shaklee are leading innovators in non-toxic cleaning supplies.

In addition, it is fairly simple and quite inexpensive to make your own natural cleaning supplies.  In fact, I recommend this as a primary cost-cutting move for anyone on a budget.

Make Your Own Cleaning Supplies:

Some of the best natural ingredients are substances that are highly acidic.  The acidity acts as a natural sterilizing agent and helps attract dirt and bacteria, allowing them to be easily removed.  Here are the best natural cleaning agents:

White Distilled Vinegar:  Been used for over 10,000 years, vinegar is amazing for all-purpose cleaners for floor, mirrors, glass, carpet, chrome, shower heads, garbage disposals, & bathrooms.  It is also a powerful deodorizer and home insect repellant.  Even better, it is completely safe, long-lasting (vinegar lasts a lifetime), and very inexpensive.

Lemon Juice:  Inside the body, fresh lemon juice digested and metabolized into an alkaline ash due to the high amount of alkaline elements it contains.  Outside the body, lemon is a very strong acid, it has a pH of 2.  The citric acid sterilizes and cleanses effectively while providing a fresh, lemony scent.  Lemon juice can be used with vinegar or in replacement of vinegar for many household cleaners, deodorizers, etc.

Baking Soda:  Baking soda is a sodium bicarbonate, a natural alkaline substance. Baking soda has a unique characteristic in that it neutralizes both acids & bases, so it actually eliminates odors rather than just covering them up.  Baking soda can also act as a very mild abrasive cleaner perfect for removing stains from sinks, counter tops and even fine china.

If you want to detoxify your house than I encourage you to come out to Exodus Health Center on Saturday at 12pm.  We will have a live demonstration where both myself and the always entertaining Charmaine Rhodes will be making non-toxic cleaning supplies, laundry supplies, beauty products, pesticide removers, and so much more.  You will learn how to save money, improve your health, and have fun creating things you may have never thought about before.

At Exodus Health Center we are fully committed to providing you with the education and resources you need to radically improve your health in every way possible.

4 Simple Detox Tips

Brian Bartholomew - Saturday, January 07, 2012

New years resolutions can be challenging at times so why not simply start by adding more good things into your diet as opposed to taking things out. Add these 4 simple detox tips to your day and you'll be sure to feel great in no time. Here's to a healthy and happy 2012!

1. Drink More Water

Too often we misinterpret thirst for hunger. Our signal for thirst may cause us to eat as we mistake it for hunger pains. Reach for water first and make sure you are well hydrated before eating any meal throughout the day. Breakfast, lunch and dinner included.

Where possible make sure to drink your water at least 30 minutes before eating as this will allow time for the water to properly penetrate the cells of your body and hydrate your stomach lining in preparation for proper digestion. I like to add lemon juice and apple cider vinegar to my water or green it up with barley grass powder, wheatgrass powder, spirulina or chlorella. Yum!

2. Add A Green Juice To Your Day

Green juices are an amazing way to add life giving and detoxifying plant chlorophyll to your bloodstream. As Jason Vale says in the upcoming new 'Food Matters' film, "juicing is the ultimate fast food, it is a 15 minute nutrient express to health". Some of my favorite and simple green juice recipes include:

Green Juice Recipe Ideas:

- Celery, lemon and pear (or apple)
- Celery, cucumber, lemon (leave the skin on) and pear (or apple)
- Celery, cucumber, kale, lemon and pear (or apple)
- Celery, cucumber, lemon, parsley and pear (or apple)

I also like to stir whatever green powders I have laying around the house into my juices to green them up even more! Again try barley grass, wheatgrass, spirulina or chlorella powders.

3. Add More Parsley and Cilantro (Corriander) To Your Diet

Parsley and cilantro (corriander) are very powerful natural green plant foods for detoxing heavy metals out of your body. Add these amazing herbs to juices, salads, soups and meals. Mike Adams from Natural News talks more about this also in the new upcoming 'Food Matters' film.

 Heavy Metal Detox Pesto Recipe:
  • 4 cloves garlic
  • 1/3 cup Brazil nuts (selenium source) or macadamia nuts
  • 1/3 cup sunflower seeds (cysteine source)
  • 1/3 cup pumpkin seeds (zinc, magnesium sources)
  • 1 cup fresh cilantro (corriander)
  • 1 cup parsley
  • 2/3 cup cold pressed olive oil
  • 4 tablespoons lemon juice (Vitamin C source)
  • Big pinch of sea salt and or dulse flakes to flavor
Soak the seeds and nuts over night to release the enzyme exhibitors. Process the parsley, cilantro (corriander) and olive oil in a blender until chopped. Add the garlic, nuts, and seeds, salt / dulse and lemon juice and mix until the mixture is finely blended into a paste. Store in dark glass jars if possible. It freezes well also if needs be. Enjoy!

4. Breathe Deep Into Your Abdomen

Deep breathing, where you fill your belly and expand your diaphragm downwards, is one of the most powerful exercise you can do to activate your lymph system which helps to detoxify your body. Think of your lymph system as your own personal garbage removal system (which most of us will need in full steam after the holiday season). Practise 10 deep slow breaths counting 4 seconds in, 8 seconds hold and 8 seconds out. You can do this exercize watching the TV, walking the dog, during meditation or whilst practising yoga.

According to the 'Tao of Breathing' up to 70% of our body’s waste products are eliminated via our lungs and the rest through the urine, skin and feces. When the efficiency of our lungs is reduced due to poor breathing less oxygen is available to our cells, it slows down the flow of blood which carries wastes from the kidneys and lungs. Our lymphatic system which fights off viral and bacterial invaders is weakened along with a slower digestive process.

The Best Way to Detox

Posted By Dr. Axe On December 27, 2010 @ 1:00 am In Toxicity | 18 Comments

[1]Have you ever been constipated? Felt bloated? Had excess gas? Felt like something just wasn’t right? Many people don’t realize that some of the physical ailments they feel on a daily basis are a result of a body that is loaded with toxins in desperate need of detox.

If you’ve ever heard the saying, “Death Begins in the Colon,” you might also know that many coroners, upon autopsy, discover diseased, toxin-laden colons. Constipation, which is related directly to a sluggish or in many cases toxin filled colon, accounts for more than 2 million doctor visits a year. And according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Americans (NIDDK) alone spend $725 million on laxatives annually. (What these suffering consumers don’t know is that these laxatives may only make their problem worse in the long run.)

According to the American Cancer Society, this year alone, 569,490 Americans will die from cancer. That’s about 1,500 people per day suffering and dying from cancer. Sadly, the past few decades have seen a significant increase in cancer diagnosis and death from cancer despite our highly advanced medical technology and early detection initiatives.

It’s vital that all Americans wake up to these deadly facts and take action. The question remains for many, “If we have the most advanced medical care in the world and early detection has become a focus of most, then why are cancer rates soaring and death from cancers killing off so many?”

Check out the following symptoms to see if your body is sending you the signals that you need to detox – soon!

Signs of Toxic Overload that a Detox can Improve:

  • Constipation
  • Bloating
  • Gas
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Aches and pains
  • Nausea
  • Belly fat (hard to lose)
  • Skin problems
  • Food cravings (especially for ‘fake foods’)
  • Low energy
  • Bad breath
  • Irritability, mood swings

Death Begins in the Colon

The colon is the body’s sewage system. But like all healthy and properly functioning sewage systems it needs to be cleaned, emptied, and maintained to function properly.

When we eat highly processed, refined, or what I call ‘fake,’ foods our colons become laden with the unhealthy debris from these foods. As you know if you’ve visited my site before, I highly advocate the removal of all fake foods from your diet for just this reason (plus a few more).

These fake foods so many Westerners consuming in huge quantities are filled with toxins in the form of high fructose syrups, hydrogenated oils, dangerous food dyes, seasonings with unknown ingredients, MSG, preservatives and other ingredients that not only do our bodies not need but really do damage to our vital organs and entire body systems.

I strongly recommend that if you (or your loved ones) currently eat a mainly fake food diet to begin to eliminate these fake foods and replace them with real foods. These are any foods from nature; as close to the source as you can get; fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts, pure water, and more organic foods that are grown locally and have no processing involved before they reach your mouth.

But many times this isn’t enough if you’ve been eating a highly processed, fake food diet for any period of time.

The Detox Bandwagon: What You Must Know First

Like I said, your colon is like a sewer, the cleaner it is, the better it will function and the healthier (and happier) you’ll be. But if this system is clogged up, slow moving, and laden with substances you don’t want sitting inside of you, it becomes a cesspool of waste stewing inside of your precious body – the only body you have.

It’s vital, let me repeat, vital, to help your colon to remove these deadly wastes. The colon is on overload and in most Westerners simply unable to keep up with the demands being placed on it. We need to take action and rid our bodies of these deadly toxins stewing in the colon.

People have become more aware of colon detoxification in recent years, however, the approach many have taken, is again, simply not helpful to the body. If you do a Google search for colon detox you’ll get back close to 2 million results. Most of these are advertisements for colon detox products being sold. Let me tell you, most of these products being sold are simply ‘fad detox’ kits with the motive not of getting you healthy but of profit.

If you want to really rid your colon of unhealthy, accumulated debris and boost your vitality and overall health you simply don’t need any of these advertised detox products to do so. In fact, these aren’t even the best means to achieving a healthy, debris and toxin-free colon. There’s a much easier, healthier way. Let me tell you exactly how to do the most effective and all natural detox for robust health.

The Daniel Detox: Achieving Optimal Colon Health the Right Way

I don’t know if you read the Bible but if you do, I’m sure you’ve heard of Daniel. Daniel went through a three week fast that consisted of eating only fruits, vegetables, and drinking water in order to purify himself.

If you want to do the easiest and healthiest detox you can follow Daniel’s advice consuming only raw, whole foods like fruits, veggies, vegetable juices, and pure water for a period of time. This period of time depends much upon the individual person, state of health, prior lifestyle habits including eating, exercise, alcohol and/or drug use, smoking habits, and exposure to pollutants in the workplace or elsewhere.

A good time amount to start with is one week, but consider doing up to three weeks. It’s best if you have any pre-existing health conditions to first consult with your health care practitioner and a holistic health care provider for suggestions and precautions.

What to Eat, What to Avoid

Not only should you eat plenty of organic, raw fruits and vegetables you should also drink lots and lots of water. Be sure that the water you’re drinking is free of fluoride or other chemical additives common in public water. If you’re able, opt for water that has a high alkaline level.

veggies-detox

There are some other whole foods you’ll want to work into your eating while detoxing. Consider garlic, wheatgrass, blue algae, hemp protein and hemp seeds, flax seed, legumes, nuts, extra virgin olive oil, and herbal and green teas.

Avoid dairy, meat, processed foods, grains, sugar, alcohol, and caffeine during your detox.

If you want to use a detox product or ‘kit,’ only use ones that are made from whole food sources and use high quality supplements. Garden of Life offers a high quality, whole food based detox product called RAW Cleanse that you can find on my online store [2].

No matter how healthy you may eat, we are all exposed to toxins on a daily basis. Our bodies were not meant to cope with such an excess of toxins, and it’s vital to do regular detoxing to support your colon and body in the fight to remove these deadly, disease causing toxins. Engaging in a raw food detox is the best way to improve your health and give your body the help it needs to get rid of toxins.

6 Ways to Detox

Six Easy Ways Detox in Our Toxic World

by Paul Fassa
See all articles by this author

(NaturalNews) In today's polluted and chemically contaminated world, we can only control toxins by what we consume or use in the home. But there is more we can't control externally. Incorporating detox protocols is actually necessary, not just nice. Fortunately, there are some simple, inexpensive methods that can be incorporated easily.

First Avoid

All processed foods, even many from health food stores, should be shunned. Most produce that's not organic is sprayed with toxic chemicals, some more than others. Find out which are worst and avoid them. Go organic as much as possible. All commercial household cleaners contain toxic materials. Ditto for laundry and dish detergents and most cosmetics.

Dry cleaning is not so dry when it comes to harsh chemicals. Try the eye and nose test in dry cleaning establishments or down the household cleaner and laundry detergent aisles of any grocery store. If you're not offended by the smell or if your eyes don't smart, you've been around this stuff too long.

Then Detox

These are a few simple detox protocols that are within reach and can be incorporated within almost any life style. There are others of course, but these can be incorporated within most lifestyles.

(1) Super foods, such as Chlorella, are excellent food based nutritional supplements that help detox as well. The Health Ranger (source below) recommends five grams of chlorella daily. Shaking chlorella powder in a jar of strong unsweetened lime or lemon water creates a mix that bypasses the unpleasant taste.

(2) Cilantro extracts, juice, pesto, or leaves with chlorella is great for removing heavy metals.
Cilantro alone has been clinically proven to remove mercury.

(3) Fasting for a week or so with lemon water mixed with cayenne has been effective for many.

(4) Lots of fiber in the diet aids bowel elimination. We should have two to three bowel movements daily.

(5) A tablespoon of activated charcoal powder taken in water on an empty stomach for one or two weeks is great for removing toxins and even heavy metals, according to Dr. Al Sears. It's virtually tasteless, just kind of messy.

(6) Enemas are proven detox methods. There is the coffee enema (organic unflavored high caffeine), which detoxes the liver, our most important toxin filter. With the coffee enema one lies on the right side for 20 minutes before eliminating. Plain water or herbal solution enemas for the bowel and lower intestines involves lying on the left side before eliminating. Either of these could be done weekly or as often as possible.

Replacing What's Been Avoided

There are many natural alternative products for all of the items to avoid that are safe and work well. Stay with bulk organic produce, grains, and legumes as much as possible. Organic hand soaps and shaving creams are available in health food stores everywhere. Natural soap nuts really do work for laundry items. Only a few soap nuts at a time need to be used for several washes; thus, the per load cost is ultimately inexpensive.

You can save money by using cheap white vinegar for house hold cleaning. Adding baking soda with vinegar works as a cleanser for sinks and toilets. That combination can even unclog drains. Use inexpensive baking soda and hydrogen peroxide for brushing teeth. There are green dry cleaners that don't use toxic chemicals cropping up. If you can find one in your area, there's your dry cleaning replacement.

Even with all the lifestyle changes, unless you're in a pristine isolated area, free from auto and industrial pollution as well as free from planes chemtrailing overhead, some detoxing is necessary.

It Might Be Time For A Detox?

It Might Be Time For A Detox?

The material in this chapter has been reprinted with permission from GaiamLife.com.

Feeling sluggish or out of sync? Having skin problems, aches and pains, or digestive problems? Straying from your healthier habits lately? It might be time for a detox.

Practiced for centuries by many cultures around the world — including ayurvedic and Chinese medicine systems — detoxification is about resting, cleaning and nourishing the body from the inside out. By removing and eliminating toxins, then feeding your body with healthy nutrients, detoxifying can help protect you from disease and renew your ability to maintain optimum health.

“The body has its own natural healing system,” says Peter Bennett, N.D., medical director of Helios Clinic in Victoria, B.C., and co-author with Stephen Barrie, N.D. and Sara Faye, of 7-Day Detox Miracle (Prima Health). “Detoxification enhances this system,” he explains.

How Does Detoxification Work?

Basically, detoxification means cleaning the blood. It does this mainly by removing impurities from the blood in the liver, where toxins are processed for elimination. The body also eliminates toxins through the kidneys, intestines, lungs, lymph and skin. However, when this system is compromised, impurities aren’t properly filtered and every cell in the body is adversely affected.

A detox program can help the body’s natural cleaning process by:

  1. Resting the organs through fasting;
  2. Stimulating the liver to drive toxins from the body;
  3. Promoting elimination through the intestines, kidneys and skin;
  4. Improving circulation of the blood; and
  5. Refueling the body with healthy nutrients.

“Detoxification works because it addresses the needs of individual cells, the smallest units of human life,” says Bennett.

How Do You Know if You Need to Detoxify?

Bennett suggests that everyone should detox at least once a year. A short detoxifying program is generally safe; in fact, scientific studies show that a detox is beneficial for health. However, Bennett cautions against detoxifying for nursing mothers, children, and patients with chronic degenerative diseases, cancer or tuberculosis. Consult your health care practitioner if you have questions about whether detoxing is right for you.

Today, with more toxins in the environment than ever, “it’s critical to detox,” says Linda Page, N.D., Ph.D., the author of Detoxification (Healthy Healing Publications). Page recommends detoxing for symptoms such as unexplained fatigue, sluggish elimination, irritated skin, allergies or low-grade infections; bags under the eyes; a distended stomach even if the rest of your body is thin; menstrual difficulties; or mental confusion.

Where Do You Begin?

First, lighten up your toxin load. Eliminate alcohol, coffee, cigarettes, refined sugars and animal based saturated fats, all of which act as toxins in the body and are obstacles to your healing process. Also, minimize use of chemical-based household cleaners and personal health care products (cleansers, shampoos, deodorants and toothpastes), and substitute natural alternatives.

Another deterrent to good health is stress, which triggers your body to release stress hormones into your system. While these hormones can provide the “adrenaline rush” to win a race or meet a deadline, in large amounts they create toxins and slow down detoxification enzymes in the liver. So it’s a good idea to detox stressful life situations along with detoxifying your body. Yoga and meditation are simple and effective ways to relieve stress by resetting your physical and mental reactions to the inevitable stress life will bring.

Which Detox Program is Best for You?

There are many detoxification programs, depending on your individual needs. Many programs follow a 7-day schedule because, as Bennett explains, “it takes the body some time to clean the blood.” His program involves fasting on liquids for two days, followed by a carefully planned five-day diet to allow the digestive system to rest. He also advises supplements, herbs, exercise, and practices such as dry-skin brushing and hydrotherapy to enhance circulation.

Page recommends a 3-7 day juice fast (drinking only fresh fruit and vegetable juices and water) as an effective way to release toxins.

Other popular detoxing programs include:

  • Cleansing supplement packages (which generally contain fiber, vitamins, herbs and minerals). There are several safe products on the market, with easy-to-follow instructions.
  • A routine of drinking only water one day each week — an ancient practice of many cultures.

10 Ways to Help Your Body Detoxify

After a detoxification program, you can cleanse your body daily through diet, supplements and lifestyle practices.

  1. Eat plenty of fiber, including brown rice and organically grown fresh fruits and vegetables. Beets, radishes, artichokes, cabbage, broccoli, spirulina, chlorella, and seaweed are excellent detoxifying foods.
  2. Cleanse and protect the liver by taking herbs such as dandelion root, burdock and milk thistle, and drinking green tea.
  3. Take vitamin C, which helps the body produce glutathione, a liver compound that drives away toxins.
  4. Drink at least 2 quarts of water daily.
  5. Breathe deeply to allow oxygen to circulate more completely through your system.
  6. Transform stress by emphasizing positive emotions.
  7. Practice hydrotherapy by taking a very hot shower for five minutes, allowing the water to run on your back. Follow with cold water for 30 seconds. Do this three times, and then get into bed for 30 minutes.
  8. Sweat in a sauna so your body can eliminate wastes through perspiration.
  9. Dry-brush your skin or try detoxifying patches or detox foot spas / foot baths to remove toxins through your pores. Special brushes are available at natural products stores.
  10. What is the most important way to detoxify? “Exercise,” says Bennett. “Yoga or jump-roping are good. One hour every day.” Also try qigong, a martial arts based exercise system that includes exercises specifically for detoxifying or cleansing, as well as many other exercises with specific health benefits.

10 Simple Tips to Reduce Chemical Exposure in Your Family
by Dr. Mercola edited by Dr. Bartholomew

Rather than lamenting over past toxic exposure to yourself or your family it is far healthier to take control over that which you can positively influence, such as your diet, your physical fitness, your emotional state, your neurological health and your current and future exposure to toxins.

You can limit your exposure to environmental chemicals as much as possible with the following tips:

  1. Buy and eat, as much as possible, organic produce and free-range, organic foods

  2. Rather than eating fish, which is largely contaminated with PCBs and mercury, consume a high-quality purified krill oil.

  3. Avoid processed foods -- remember that they're processed with chemicals!

  4. Only use natural cleaning products in your home. Most health food stores will have these available or you can search online for them.  See Seventh Generation Products or check out Greenstar's selection.

  5. Switch over to natural brands of toiletries, including shampoo, toothpaste, antiperspirants and cosmetics. Same sources here, either your local health food store or you can search online.

  6. Avoid spraying insect repellants that contain DEET on your body. There are safe, effective and natural alternatives out there.

  7. Remove any metal fillings. Amalgams are a major source of mercury and any metal, including gold, can cause biogalvanism. Be sure to have this done by a qualified biological dentist. Although nearly any dentist is technically qualified to replace your amalgam fillings, far less than 95 percent have any clue on how to do it properly so your risk of mercury exposure is minimized.  Let me know if you are looking for a Mercury Free Dentist as we know of 2 great ones in the area.

  8. Avoid using artificial air fresheners, dryer sheets, fabric softeners or other synthetic fragrances as they can pollute the air you are breathing.  Here is how you can tell if something is artificial: If it doesn't smell natural, smells too strong or too powerful, it is most likely not natural and most likely toxic. e.g. glade plug-ins.

  9. Avoid artificial food additives of all kind, including artificial sweeteners and MSG.

  10. Limit your use of drugs (prescription and over-the-counter) as much as possible. Drugs are chemicals too, and they will leave residues and accumulate in your body over time.  Remember many medication are to lower symptoms but not to treat the cause of the problem.  Often the body gives symptoms as warning signs of chronic toxic stress, emotional stress, nutritional stress or nerve stress.  To artificially lower these signals/symptoms with chemicals is sometimes necessary but to do this for months or years is often more harmful than helpful.
