Study: Antidepressants May Cause Worse Depression

Study: Antidepressants actually cause many people to have worse depression

NaturalNews

Most who received placebo saw a gradual improvement in depression symptoms, while nearly 20% of those taking antidepressants became worse

A recent industry-funded study on antidepressant drugs has revealed that the medications can cause roughly 20 percent of patients to get worse depression symptoms than if they simply took nothingPublished in the journal Archives of General Psychiatry, the study, which was largely controlled by drug giant Eli Lilly, is an eye-opener for those who still put their faith in antidepressants like Cymbalta (duloxetine), which carry with them life-altering side effects.

Ralitza Gueorguieva, lead author of the study from the Yale University School of Health, and her colleagues conducted trials on 2,500 people, all of whom were given either Cymbalta, various other antidepressant drugs, or a drug-free placebo for two months. At the conclusion of the study, most of those who received the placebo saw a gradual improvement in their depression symptoms, while nearly 20 percent of those taking antidepressants saw a worsening of their symptoms.

According to Reuters Health one of the study’s three authors is an employee of Eli Lilly, the company that makes Cymbalta, while another is on the company’s scientific advisory board.

What this all means is that patients who choose to use antidepressants, despite the numerous studies showing that they really do not work and can cause tremendous harm (http://www.naturalnews.com/antidepr…), as well as their doctors, need to pay close attention to what effect the drugs are having. If no improvement is seen, it is perhaps best to stop using the drugs completely and turn to alternatives.

Judge Rules Prozac Can Cause Children to Commit Murder

Canadian judge rules SSRI antidepressants like Prozac can cause children to commit murder

by Jonathan Benson, staff writer

(NaturalNews) The use of antidepressant and psychiatric drugs, particularly among children, is an extremely risky activity that could have fatal consequences for both the individuals that use them, as well as their friends and family. According to the National Post, a Canadian judge recently ruled that the extreme mind-altering effects of the antidepressant drug Prozac were in large part responsible for causing a 15-year-old boy to thrust a nine-inch kitchen knife into one of his closest friends.

Though the Winnipeg boy that committed the heinous crime had allegedly abused prescription drugs and "experimented" with cocaine long prior to the incident, he had never had a violent or aggressive personality about him, according to reports. It was only when he began taking Prozac, the very thing doctors had given him as a so-called "solution" to his previous illicit drug problems, that he began to rapidly go off the deep end.

"He had become irritable, restless, agitated, aggressive and unclear in his thinking," said Justice Robert Heinrichs of the Manitoba Justice Department, who ruled on the case. "It was while in that state he overreacted in an impulsive, explosive and violent way. Now that his body and mind are free and clear of any effects of Prozac, he is simply not the same youth in behavior or character."

What the judge appears to be implying here is that Prozac is directly responsible for altering the brain of a user and causing them to think irrationally, which in turn can cause them to harm themselves or others. In other words, if it were not for the use of this mind-warping drug, the murderer in this case most likely would never have dreamed of slaughtering one of his best friends.

Judge Heinrichs ultimately determined that, because of the drug's involvement, the boy who murdered his friend would not be tried in an adult court. Even though the boy pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, the judge only added a ten-month sentence on top of the two years that the boy had already spent in jail pending the trial -- and there will apparently be no appeal, which is a first in any North American court.

In a similar outcome back in 2001, a Wyoming jury ruled that the antidepressant drug Paxil had caused a man to murder his wife, daughter, and granddaughter, after which he killed himself. And one of the mass-murderers in the infamous Columbine High School shooting, Eric Harris, had allegedly been taking the antidepressant drug Luvox at the time that he participated in the tragedy (http://www.naturalnews.com/019342.html).

Why Antidepressants Don't Work for Treating Depression

Posted: 04/24/10 08:00 AM ET

Here's some depressing recent medical news: Antidepressants don't work. What's even more depressing is that the pharmaceutical industry and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have deliberately deceived us into believing that they DO work. As a physician, this is frightening to me. Depression is among the most common problems seen in primary-care medicine and soon will be the second leading cause of disability in this country.

The study I'm talking about was published in The New England Journal of Medicine. It found that drug companies selectively publish studies on antidepressants. They have published nearly all the studies that show benefit -- but almost none of the studies that show these drugs are ineffective. (1)

That warps our view of antidepressants, leading us to think that they do work. And it has fueled the tremendous growth in the use of psychiatric medications, which are now the second leading class of drugs sold, after cholesterol-lowering drugs.

The problem is even worse than it sounds, because the positive studies hardly showed benefit in the first place. For example, 40 percent of people taking a placebo (sugar pill) got better, while only 60 percent taking the actual drug had improvement in their symptoms. Looking at it another way, 80 percent of people get better with just a placebo.

That leaves us with a big problem -- millions of depressed people with no effective treatments being offered by most conventional practitioners. However, there are treatments available. Functional medicine provides a unique and effective way to treat depression and other psychological problems. Today I will review seven steps you can take to work through your depression without drugs. But before we get to that, let's take a closer look at depression.

What's in a Name?

"Depression" is simply a label we give to people who have a depressed mood most of the time, have lost interest or pleasure in most activities, are fatigued, can't sleep, have no interest in sex, feel hopeless and helpless, can't think clearly, or can't make decisions.

But that label tells us NOTHING about the cause of those symptoms. In fact, there are dozens of causes of depression -- each one needing a different approach to treatment. Depression is not one-size-fits-all, but it is very common.

Women have a 10 to 25 percent risk and men a five to 12 percent risk of developing severe major depression in their lifetime. (2) One in ten Americans takes an antidepressant. The use of these drugs has tripled in the last decade, according to a report by the federal government. In 2006, spending on antidepressants soared by 130 percent.

But just because antidepressants are popular doesn't mean they're helpful. Unfortunately, as we now see from this report in The New England Journal of Medicine, they don't work and have significant side effects. Most patients taking antidepressants either don't respond or have only partial response. In fact, success is considered just a 50 percent improvement in half of depressive symptoms. And this minimal result is achieved in less than half the patients taking antidepressants.

That's a pretty dismal record. It's only made worse by the fact that 86 percent of people taking antidepressants have one or more side effects, including sexual dysfunction, fatigueinsomnia, loss of mental abilities, nausea, and weight gain.

No wonder half the people who try antidepressants quit after four months.

Now I want to talk to you about the reasons why doctors and patients have been deceived by the "antidepressant hoax." Despite what we have been brainwashed to believe, depression is not a Prozac deficiency!

How We have Been Deceived by the Antidepressant Hoax

Drug companies are not forced to publish all the results of their studies. They only publish those they want to. The team of researchers that reported their findings in The New England Journal of Medicine took a critical look at all the studies done on antidepressants, both published and unpublished. They dug up some serious dirt ...

The unpublished studies were not easy to find. The researchers had to search the FDA databases, call researchers, and hunt down hidden data under the Freedom of Information Act. What they found was stunning.

After looking at 74 studies involving 12 drugs and over 12,000 people, they discovered that 37 of 38 trials with positive results were published, while only 14 of 36 negative studies were published. Those that showed negative results were, in the words of the researchers, "published in a way that conveyed a positive outcome."

That means the results were twisted to imply the drugs worked when they didn't.

This isn't just a problem with antidepressants. It's a problem with scientific research. Some drug companies even pay or threaten scientists to not publish negative results on their drugs. So much for "evidence-based" medicine! I recently had dinner with a step-uncle who runs a company that designs research for drug companies. He designs the study, hires the researcher from an esteemed institution, directs the study, writes up the study and the scientist just signs his or her name after reviewing it.

Most of the time, we only have the evidence that the drug companies want us to have. Both doctors and patients are deceived into putting billions of dollars into drug companies' pockets, while leaving millions with the same health problems but less money.

The scientific trust is broken. What can we do? Unfortunately, there is no easy answer. But I do think functional medicine, on which my approach of UltraWellness is based, provides a more intelligent way of understanding the research. Rather than using drugs to suppress symptoms, Functional Medicine helps us find the true causes of problems, including depression.

I see this in so many of the patients I have treated over the years. Just as the same things that make us sick also make us fat, the same things that make us sick also make us depressed. Fix the causes of sickness -- and the depression takes care of itself.

Consider a few cases from my practice ...

A 23-year-old had been anxious and depressed most of her life and spent her childhood and adolescence on various cocktails of antidepressants. Turns out, she suffered from food allergies that made her depressed.

Food allergies cause inflammation, and studies now show inflammation in the brains of depressed people. In fact, researchers are studying powerful anti-inflammatory drugs used in autoimmune disease such as Enbrel for the treatment of depression.

After she eliminated her IgG or delayed food allergies, her depression went away, she got off her medication -- and she lost 30 pounds as a side effect!

Here's another story ... A 37-year-old executive woman struggled for more than a decade with treatment-resistant depression (meaning that drugs didn't work), fatigue, and a 40-pound weight gain. We found she had very high levels of mercury. Getting the mercury out of her body left her happy, thin, and full of energy.

Or consider the 49-year-old man with severe lifelong depression who had been on a cocktail of antidepressants and psychiatric medication for years but still lived under a dark cloud every day, without relief. We found he had severe deficiencies of vitamin B12, B6, and folate. After we gave him back those essential brain nutrients, he called me to thank me. Last year was the first year he could remember feeling happy and free of depression.

These are just a few of the dozens of things that can cause depression.

The roots of depression are found in the 7 keys to UltraWelless and the 7 fundamental underlying imbalances that trigger the body to malfunction. Taking antidepressants is not the answer to our looming mental health epidemic. The real cure lies in rebalancing the underlying systems in your body that are at the root of all healthy and illness.

Here are a few things you can do to start treating your depression today.

7 Steps to Treat Depression without Drugs

1. Try an anti-inflammatory elimination diet that gets rid of common food allergens. As I mentioned above, food allergies and the resultant inflammation have been connected with depression and other mood disorders.

2. Check for hypothyroidism. This unrecognized epidemic is a leading cause of depression. Make sure to have thorough thyroid exam if you are depressed.

3. Take vitamin D. Deficiency in this essential vitamin can lead to depression. Supplement with at least 2,000 to 5,000 IU of vitamin D3 a day.

4. Take omega-3 fats. Your brain is made of up this fat, and deficiency can lead to a host of problems. Supplement with 1,000 to 2,000 mg of purified fish oil a day.

5. Take adequate B12 (1,000 micrograms, or mcg, a day), B6 (25 mg) and folic acid (800 mcg). These vitamins are critical for metabolizing homocysteine, which can play a factor in depression.

6. Get checked for mercury. Heavy metal toxicity has been correlated with depression and other mood and neurological problems.

7. Exercise vigorously five times a week for 30 minutes. This increases levels of BDNF, a natural antidepressant in your brain.

Overcoming depression is an important step toward lifelong vibrant health. These are just of few of the easiest and most effective things you can do to treat depression. But there are even more, which you can address by simply working through the 7 Keys to UltraWellness.

Eating Nuts Good For Your Heart and For Depression

Nuts may fend off heart disease

(NaturalNews) A recent study conducted by scientists at the University of Barcelona in collaboration with the Human Nutrition Unit of the Rovira i Virgili University in Tarragona, reveals that eating nuts can elevate serotonin levels in the bodies of individuals suffering from metabolic syndrome. (Metabolic Syndrome puts individuals at higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease and diabetes). Unfortunately, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in the USA alone has been estimated at approximately 25%.

Serotonin is an important hormone and neurotransmitter with a dual function in the human body. While it is located mostly in the enterochromaffin cells in the gut, where it regulates intestinal movement, smaller amounts of serotonin can also be found in the central nervous system, where it helps regulate mood, appetite and sleep. Moreover, elevated serotonin levels correlate positively with good heart health.

In the study carried out by the Spanish team, only one ounce of mixed nuts (revealed to be walnuts, hazelnuts and almonds) per day was sufficient to produce noteworthy results. In addition to their influence on serotonin levels, nuts are also a good source of heart-healthy antioxidants. Another study carried out earlier this year revealed that walnuts contain higher quality antioxidants than any other nuts. Furthermore, nuts have a longstanding reputation as reliable sources of protein, while also containing important vitamins, unsaturated fats, minerals and dietary fiber.

Dr Cristina Andres-Lacueva of the University of Barcelona insisted that the rising numbers of obesity cases we have seen around the world are a clear indicator that more and more people are developing metabolic syndrome. The prevailing symptoms of this disorder include excess abdominal fat, high blood sugar and high blood pressure, but even slight dietary modifications, such as an increased consumption of nuts, can help patients regain control over their bodies, improve their metabolic rates and boost their energy levels.

"Because of the important role of serotonin in the regulation of energy balance, metabolism, and glucose homeostasis, attention should also be given in the future to the eventual effects of nut intake on the serotoriemic status of subjects with metabolic syndrome", explained the scientists.

For their test, the research team asked a group of 22 individuals that had been previously diagnosed with metabolic syndrome to consume a nut-rich diet, for a period of 12 weeks. These results were then compared to those of a second group of 20 individuals, who were told to avoid consuming any nuts over the 12 week duration of the trial.

The Spanish scientists then analyzed urine samples from both groups, and identified several important differences that could be linked to the presence or absence of nuts from one's diet. Their most important discovery was that nut consumption had effectively boosted serotonin production for the individuals in the test group. Dr Cristina Andres-Lacueva's team holds that this is the first instance when a laboratory study is able to confirm that nut consumption can effectively reduce cardiovascular risk factors in people with metabolic syndrome.

The research was published in the prestigious Journal of Proteome Research of the American Chemical Society.

Mental Health and Chiropractic

Mental health and chiropractic

by Dr. Christopher Kent

The scope of chiropractic is as broad as the scope of influence of the nervous system. Although many chiropractors and those they serve tend to focus on disorders associated with the physical body, it is obvious that abnormal nervous system function may also affect emotional and psychological health.

According to B.J. Palmer, “D.D. Palmer was the first man to discover that insanity was caused by displaced cervical vertebrae, that by replacing them the patient could be restored to normal condition.” [1] B.J. also described his expert testimony in a case where he stated, “If an atlas is subluxated it makes abnormal the functions of the brain” In answer to the question, “What is to be done in insanity?” he admonished his reader to “Go back to cause. Adjust that and return that brain to its normal capacity and capability.” [2]

Several inpatient mental health facilities were established, where chiropractic adjustments were the dominant clinical service provided. Two of these were located in Davenport. In 1922, the Chiropractic Psychopathic Sanitarium was established. The facility was later known as Forest Park Sanitarium. North Dakota Judge A. W. Ponath noted that at the North Dakota state mental hospital, the “cure and discharge rate” ranged from 1827%, compared to 65% at Forest Park. [3]

The second facility, Clear View Sanitarium, was established in 1926. In 1951, Clear View was acquired by the Palmer School of Chiropractic. Dr. W. Heath Quigley, who directed the sanitarium, described he clinical protocol: “Each day, each patient was examined with the neurocalometer (NCM). If the clinician interpreted the NCM to indicate nerve impingement, the patient was adjusted.” Quigley reported that the rooms were “sunny and bright,” and that meals included “large servings of fresh vegetables…from a garden.” [4]

Unfortunately, both institutions closed, (Forest Park in 1959 and Clear View in 1961) in large measure because of third party pay issues. Insurance companies often refused to pay the costs of care. Iowa statutes at the time did not provide for licensing specialized hospitals; only full service medical hospitals could be licensed. [5] Clear View was not licensed as a hospital, and functioned legally as a nursing home.

The 1970s saw a renewed interest in chiropractic care and mental health issues. In 1973, Dr. Herman S. Schwartz, a chiropractor, published a book titled “Mental Health and Chiropractic: A Multidisciplinary Approach.” [6] In 1949, Dr. Schwartz had published a preliminary report of 350 patients afflicted with a “nervous or mental disorder” and reported that the majority of them showed improvement under chiropractic care. [7] Dr. Schwartz was active in the ACA Council on Mental Health (formerly Council on Psychotherapy), which survived through the ’70s, but no longer exists.

In the 1980s, Dr. Quigley published an article describing a four decades period where “treatment of the mentally ill was a highly motivated discipline within the chiropractic profession.” [8] In 1988, Dr. Goff, an Ed.D., published a review of the theory and practice of “chiropractic treatment for mental illness.” [9]

Interest in this field continues. In a previous column, the author reviewed the role of chiropractic care in children with learning and behavioral impairments. [10] Blanks, Schuster and Dobson [11] published the results of a retrospective assessment of subluxationbased chiropractic care on selfrelated health, wellness and quality of life. This is, to my knowledge, the largest study of its kind ever undertaken regarding a chiropractic population. After surveying 2,818 respondents in 156 practices, a strong connection was found between persons receiving Network care and selfreported improvement in health, wellness and qualityoflife.

Genthner et al [12] recently reported on a series of 15 patients with a history of depression. The Beck Depression Inventory II was used to measure the baseline level of depression and any postcare changes following orthospinology care. A paired ttest demonstrated significant improvement in depression test scores.

Nearly 38 years ago, my chiropractor explained that everything we experience is processed through our nervous system. When our perception of the world is distorted by nerve interference, it compromises our ability to respond appropriately. He noted that in addition to damaging our physical health, it could result in impaired psychological and emotional function as well. Finally, he opined that when this happened to a significant number of people in a society, a sick society would result.

In response to my question, “So what do you do?” he answered, “I locate and correct the cause of that interference.” I got goose bumps then, and I’m getting them now. It became obvious at that point that I had to become a chiropractor, and change the world.

Risperdal Drug Maker Faces $1B in Lawsuits, Yet Mother Charged for Refusing Use on Child

Risperdal Drug Maker Faces $1B in Lawsuits, Yet Mother Charged for Refusing Use on Child

by Monica G. Young

What irony. Detroit mother, Maryanne Godboldo, was just charged with child neglect for refusing to obey a Child Protective Services order to give her daughter Risperdal, a powerful psychoactive drug. Meanwhile federal and multiple state prosecutors are suing Johnson & Johnson for deceptively marketing the drug - including mismarketing its use on children - and hiding dangerous adverse effects. J&J now faces a potential $1 billion in damages.

Having earlier observed the drug's dreadful effects on her child, Maryanne was correctly pursuing holistic treatment for the child instead when the legal battle began. The jury's ruling, now handed down against the mother, is not only a travesty of justice, but a reflection of psychopharma's vast propaganda machine. (http://www.naturalnews.com/033295_p...)

Fortunately not everyone is fooled. The US Department of Justice (DOJ) has been investigating J&J for years in regards Risperdal - its sales practices, pay-offs to doctors to promote the drug, and failures to disclose harmful effects. The pharma giant has now tentatively agreed to settle a misdemeanor criminal charge, however the DOJ and US attorney's office are pursuing additional criminal actions.

The government plans to join civil lawsuits filed by company whistleblowers, aiming to recover millions of dollars paid for prescriptions via government health programs like Medicare and Medicaid.

Already multimillions in fines have been levied against J&J for this powerful antipsychotic which is widely prescribed not only for schizophrenia but mood and anxiety disorders, dementia and other unapproved uses.

In June, a South Carolina judge demanded the company pay $327 million to the state for deceptively marketing Risperdal and concealing its dangers. The judge called J&J's practices "detestable." Last October, a Louisiana jury ordered the company to ante up $257.7 million for misleading claims about the drug's safety.

Recently, Massachusetts Attorney General joined the fight, filing a lawsuit against J&J for illegal marketing and failing to disclose "an increased risk of death" connected with the drug.

In Texas the Attorney General Office has joined forces with whistleblowers, with a jury trial scheduled for this fall. This lawsuit alleges that Janssen, J&J's pharmaceutical division, intentionally marketed Risperdal for use on children even though it was only approved for adult schizophrenia. The suit also involves a company scheme to boost prescriptions by paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to "experts" to evaluate and recommend the drug state-wide and nationally. Awarded damages are anticipated to be much larger than in South Carolina or Louisiana. Texas has paid more than $500 million for the drug since it was first brought to the market.

Attorneys general in about 40 other states have shown interest in suing the company.

Users speak out - beware of this drug!

Risperdal's documented "side effects" include huge weight gain, diabetes, lethargy, muscular tics, breast development in males, and many more.

Below are just a few sample statements made online by individuals from their experience with this so-called "medication" (the root word of medicate means "to heal"):

"Basically I lost the drive for everything. Total shut down to my outgoing personality. Massive weight gain."

"Tardive dyskinesia [involuntary movement disorder], diabetes, gained 100 pounds in the first year, was a zombie... I was put on this nightmare drug when I was six. I was forced to take it against my will, and it ruined my life... This is a horrible, HORRIBLE drug, and should be banned."

"Apathy, not talking, just staring, sleeping constantly, tongue movements, loss of sexual function. This is a very BAD DRUG...a mental straight jacket. DO NOT put children on this drug!!! It's poison."

"I gained weight, became very tired, and of course that just led them to put me on antidepressant medications.... I have been on it since fifth grade and hardly knew what was happening to me."

"My son has gained over 100 pounds... He was an excellent student, received a doctorate and now cannot even remember what he studied. He sleeps all day and cannot work a job. His quality of life is nil. His mouth twitches and he has no control over it... It is like taking a dose of legalized poison every day. This is a LIFE WASTED AND RUINED, a brilliant mind destroyed and tortured. As a mother, it rips out my heart every day."

Yet per Johnson & Johnson annual reports, global Risperdal sales from 1994-2010 totaled nearly $29 billion.

Antidepressants Increase the Risk of Breast Cancer

Antidepressants increase the risk of breast cancer

by J. D. Heyes

(NaturalNews) Women who take an SSRI - selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor - antidepressant have a higher risk of developing breast cancer, according to a meta-analysis of 61 separate studies indicated.

"Reviewing the evidence is a critical public health issue in light of the increasing prevalence of antidepressant use, especially among women, and in light of the fact that one in eight women will be diagnosed with cancer of the breast during their lifetime," said the study, according to a report from the Alliance for Human Research Protection.

An astounding 27 million Americans regularly use antidepressants - most of whom are women, the report said. In fact, women are twice as likely as men to be diagnosed with MDD - Major Depressive Disorder - and three times as likely to be diagnosed with other Dysthymic Disorder, a chronic type of depression in which a person's moods are regularly low.

Worse, antidepressants are increasingly being prescribed for a host of other conditions including hot flashes, neuropathy, headaches, back pain and eating disorders. In fact, the report said, antidepressants are now the third-most prescribed medications, behind cholesterol-lowering drugs and painkillers.

That's bad news for women, based on the meta-analysis findings regarding the higher incidence of breast cancer. But it's also disturbing for women - and, more often, children as well - because of the increased risk to them posed by the dangerous effects of SSRI's.

That class of drugs, "which disturb the brain's chemistry, raising levels of serotonin, increase suicide and have been implicated in homicide cases," said the AHRP report. "They are also linked to birth defects."

And yet, it's difficult to get the word out, mostly because of the medical establishment's ties to Big Pharma and other beholden interests - a phenomenon the AHRP report acknowledges.

The study's authors "report the difficulty of uncovering the serious risks posed by SSRIs from the journal reports that fail to disclose serious negative findings. The tainted reports are often ghostwritten, but signed by prominent psychiatrists who have financial ties to drug manufacturers. The reports serve as industry promotional marketing vehicles--thus, any findings that might interfere with marketing goals are buried."

SSRI-related problems are especially growing in the United States, because doctors here prescribe them freely.

Antidepressant use in the U.S. alone doubled in a 10-year period, between 1996 and 2005. At the same time, research has shown that SSRI use is linked to a number of illnesses and conditions, including increased risk of stroke and heart disease, as well as - oddly enough - psychological problems, many of which have led to suicide.

Defeating Depression: as Easy as Omega-3

Posted By Dr. Mercola |

Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish, may hold the key to naturally easing depression.

In the past, studies have shown that in countries where large amounts of fish are consumed, rates of depression are low as compared with countries where little fish is consumed. This has led researchers to examine whether omega-3 fats found in the fish are responsible for the decreased evidence of depression.

One study followed patients with bipolar disorder. Half of the participants were given fish oil tablets and the other half received a placebo. After four months, half of those on the placebo had fallen into depression, but only two out the 15 people given fish oil were depressed.

Other studies have shown similar results indicating that omega-3 fatty acids may in fact relieve depression, and some psychiatrists are now recommending that their depressed patients increase their consumption of these fatty acids.

In addition to its positive effects on depression, studies have linked omega-3s with improved cardiovascular health, as well as shown them to be a potential prevention and treatment tool for certain cancers and inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis.

Omega-3 fatty acids have also proved beneficial to the development of babies’ brains; therefore, pregnant and breast-feeding women are encouraged to consume these fatty acids. However, eating fish as a source of omega-3s can be dangerous to pregnant mothers because of potentially high levels of mercury in the fish.

One side effect that may occur from consuming increased amounts of fatty acids through fish or fish-oil tablets is an increase in dyspepsia, or indigestion that may result in gas, though researchers point out that this has been the only side effect discovered.

Researchers noted that further studies need to be done to determine whether patients would benefit from an increase in omega-3s in combination with antidepressant drugs.

There are a number of studies that show that fish oils are associated with decreased depression.

If this subject interests you, I highly recommend Dr. Stoll's book The Omega-3 Connection. He is a Harvard psychiatrist who has done a great job of compiling the evidence supporting the use of fish oils for depression.

It is important to recognize that I no longer recommend taking fish oil in capsule form. Ideally, fish oil should be consumed in a liquid form, as then there is no gelatin capsule to digest. Using high quality oil is essential to ensure that the product is pure and fresh, though it can be hard to locate a good brand in stores.

The dose for both the cod liver or plain fish oil liquid is about one teaspoon for every 50 pounds of body weight per day. So, if you weigh 150 pounds that would be about one tablespoon (three teaspoons) per day. This is the equivalent of 15 typical fish oil capsules. This is a good initial dose for most people, but if you notice any belching or repeating it is likely your gallbladder is not digesting the fish oil properly and you may need to take a high potency enzyme with plenty of the fat digesting enzyme lipase.

If you continue to have nausea with the fish oil, it is probably wise to activate the Listen to Your Body Principle and avoid the fish oil until you can be evaluated by a competent natural health care practitioner.

Many people are confused about the difference between fish oil liquid and cod liver oil. It helps to consider cod liver oil as fish oil Plus. It is the same as fish oil, but it has natural vitamin D and A. For most of us, during the winter this becomes an important consideration as we don’t receive enough sun exposure to generate the vitamin D we need to provide us with all the health benefits vitamin D has to offer.

If you are unsure about your vitamin D levels, you should have them measured. Ideally, everyone should. If you overdose on vitamin D you can actually cause osteoporosis and hardening of your arteries as it causes a reverse effect. Unfortunately, very few physicians offer this test.

A recent study highlighted another reason for pregnant women to supplement their diets with fish oil. (J Affect Disord 2002 May;69(1-3):15-29) The study showed that mothers transfer DHA, a fatty acid found in fish oil, to their fetuses to support optimal neurological development during pregnancy. If the woman doesn’t receive enough DHA, she runs the risk of developing severe postpartum depression.

3 Natural Ways to Effectively Increase Serotonin and Combat Depression!

3 Natural Ways to Effectively Increase Serotonin and Combat Depression!

When it comes to feeling happy there’s no doubt that serotonin plays a vital role. What I want you to consider is this; there are all natural ways to increase levels of serotonin thereby improving your mood that don’t require a prescription.

According to research practicing acts of kindness, such as volunteering or contributing to charities raises not just your own levels of serotonin but that of the people being helped and anyone who simply witnesses this act of kindness.

In two studies out of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) results showed actual changes in the brain when people are altruistic. This included increased levels of serotonin.

Yes, that’s right. When you volunteer or give money to those in need you are not just helping them you’re making yourself feel better. Now this doesn’t just mean that once a week you can feel good by going to your local shelter and helping out. You can practice altruism in your daily life.

Hold a door for someone, make eye contact and say thank you, ask someone how their day is, pick up a piece of litter on the ground – all of these daily small acts of kindness will really pay off.

Making healthy, good decisions for yourself can also reap large rewards in overall happiness.

#1 Exercise – The more you move the more your body naturally produces serotonin and other neuropeptides that make you feel happy.  If your not already exercising now is a great time to start.  Go for a run, bike ride, or go to the gym and also find a partner because working out is also more fun with a friend.

#2 Eat Healthy Fats – 60% of your brain is made up of fat.  So if you want to have balanced hormones and a boosted mood try Omega-3 Fats.  Salmon, Sardines, Walnuts, and Flaxseeds are all packed with this brain building nutrient that helps improve happiness.

#3 Find Your Purpose - Mother Teresa spent 45 years of her life dedicated to the poor, sick, orphaned, and dying. She found her purpose in helping the Indian people and made it her life’s work. Rick Warren in his inspirational, life changing book, Purpose Driven Life, says, if we want to experience daily happiness and joy it’s vital to have a life purpose. What are your gifts?  What are you passionate about?  Is there any kind of work you could do all day and the time just flies by?

Take a minute and write down your top 3 strengths, top 3 passions, and top 3 opportunities you have right now to serve or add value to someones life.
