Sunscreen & Sunburn by Dr. Brian Bartholomew With Info from Dr. Axe and Mercola

As you know the seasonal sunshine that we all live for has taken a lot of heat lately.  I am here to tell you that sunshine is essential for your health and that in fact, a lack of sun is detrimental to your physical and psychological health.  If you plan and utilize the correct sun products and strategies you will not only be able to bask and enjoy yourself, you will also gain many health benefits!

The first rule for sun exposure is exposure time.  Initially you should only expose your unscreened skin to 15 minutes of sun per day.  Using caps or clothing is a good way to screen yourself after the initial 15 minutes.  As you build tolerance and color you can increase your exposure from 15 minutes to 30 to 45 to 60..

One thing you must know it that the sun does have some potentially harmful rays called Alpha rays or "the bad guys".  Alpha rays are always present whereas beta rays are most intense in the mid day hours.  Beta rays are the "good guys" who help you body produce Vitamin D.  Vitamin D is essential for healthy mood, healthy bones, healthy skin, kidney function and hormone production.  If you are looking to get Vit D and some color, do so in the mid day from 10am-2pm.  Other than those times it makes sense to wear clothing that physically blocks the alpha rays.

If you are looking for healthy sunblock so you can stay in the sun longer remember this rule: If you are not willing to drink it don't put it on your skin.  Your skin is the number one detoxification organ in the body, famous for leaking out toxins and sweat.  Skin has pores that are very "porous", designed to let toxins out and but when we slather ourselves with pollutants, we absorb them and block our body's natural detoxification process. This is why you should not lather yourself or your children with sunscreen that is full of toxins.  If you are going to be out for long periods of time and want to use lotion to block alpha rays the best option is Dr. Mercola's Natural Sunscreen

What do you do if you to happen to get a sunburn?  Find you closest aloe vera plant or mix up some of Dr. Axe's Super Sunburn Relief Spray.
